The Happy Clam Shack
About This Spot
Stepping into The Happy Clam Shack feels like slipping into a well-loved local secret where the rhythm is unhurried and the focus is simply on good, honest food enjoyed outdoors. Nestled along Bar Harbor’s scenic Bar Harbor Road, this takeout spot invites you to slow down, gather your order at the counter, and find a corner at one of the picnic tables scattered under open skies or protective umbrellas. It’s the kind of place where the breeze carries the faint scent of the sea, mingling with the smoky notes of wood-fired cooking crafted lovingly on the owners’ homemade grills.
The atmosphere here is unpretentious and welcoming, giving you a chance to savor the moment at your own pace. There’s a refreshing simplicity to the experience — no table service, a gentle nudge toward self-sufficiency, and a shared understanding that a quick cleanup helps keep this gem running smoothly. With only outdoor seating, you get to embrace the rhythm of the day, whether it’s warm sunshine, a sprinkle of rain, or the steady Maine coast breeze. The setting encourages spontaneous conversations and friendly nods from neighbors sharing in the simple joy of a freshly made lobster roll or the comforting warmth of clam chowder.
The menu offerings echo the tides and seasons of the region, from tender soft shell clams and steamer clams to the iconic lobster rolls served alongside creamy chowders and a slice of homemade blueberry pie. Each bite tells a story of place — of ocean harvests, summer afternoons, and small moments of contentment. Families find a home here too, with thoughtful choices for little ones enjoying their own quiet feast while grown-ups unwind with classic coastal flavors.
The Happy Clam Shack captures a very particular kind of happiness — part nostalgia, part discovery, and entirely rooted in the senses and simplicity of gathering around good food in the fresh air. It’s a spot that invites you to pause, appreciate, and carry the taste of Bar Harbor’s maritime spirit with you as you continue your day.

This is a take out place . You ordered at the counter, and they called your number to pick it up. Picnic tables are available to sit and eat your purchase. Sign up saying no service, so clean up after yourself. I do wish they would update the menu. Online prices were very different much higher . The food was very good . $ 3.00 charge to use credit card

The food was good but I wish there had been at least a flavored butter option, like garlic or something to add an extra layer of flavor. Also, the bathroom is a Port-a-John. You also eat outside, but luckily there were some tables with umbrellas to protect us from the rain. The tables were wet though because the umbrellas had not been put up.

Local gem! Everything thing about this place is great. Outdoor wood cooking equipment that was made by the owners. Lobster roll, lobster and blueberry pie/ muffins were excellent. Guy Fieri is looking for places like this. Thanks for your excellent hospitality! Outdoor seating only I believe.

Best lobster roll I had on our whole trip. There is only outdoor seating. The restroom is a porta-john.

We had a couple of lobster rolls while we were in Bar Harbor and this was our first stop on the way into town. By far the BEST lobster roll we had on our trip!!!!

What a great place, with even better people. Truly the friendliest people we met on our travels through Maine. The soft shell lobster was the best we’ve ever had. And the blueberry pie was the cherry on top - truly a slice of heaven. Can’t say enough good things about this place and the people!

Wonderful small New England clam shack. Plenty of outdoor seating and parking. (No indoor dining) This was one of our highlight lobster rolls in Maine. Their lobster was fresh and succulent, corn on the cob was so fresh and yummy, I almost thought she cut it off out back just to cook it for me! I also bought a piece of blueberry pie to eat later. BEST SLICE OF BB PIE IN MY LIFE!
